The 5th TC10/TC11 Summer School on Document Analysis

July 3-7 2023, Fribourg, Switzerland

Attendance

The summer school is located on Monday and Friday at the University of Fribourg. From Monday 16:00 to Friday 09:30, it will take place in a chalet in Moléson-sur-Gruyère.

What to bring?

If you wish, you can bring some food or a drink typical of your region or country to share with the group.

Specially for Switzerland

  • Adapter for swiss plugs.
  • If you come from the Schengen area: European Health Insurance Card. Beware, a hospital stay can cost thousands or even tens of thousands of francs. Without this card you have to pay in advance all the costs!
  • Otherwise: you must have a private medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR.
  • Basic medication (no pharmacy or shop near the chalet and expensive in Switzerland).
  • Swiss francs or a credit card that works abroad (consider checking costs before you leave).
  • Buying train/bus ticket online or at the station but not onboard.

For the chalet

  • Hiking and games: Sport outfit, sport shoes, hiking boots.
  • Against cold: Pullover, normal and rain jacket.
  • For sun protection: Hat, sunglasses, suncream.
  • Shower: Towel, shower gel and shampoo.
  • Slipper.

If you wish:

  • Sleeping bag (military blanket and bed sheet are provided).
  • Hair dryer.
  • Sleeping mask.
  • Refill bottle, tap water is always drinkable.

How to reach Fribourg?

Fribourg is located 30 km south of Bern and 50 km north of Lausanne. It is easy to reach Fribourg by direct train from the airport of Geneva (1h30) and Zurich (2h). Coming from the EuroAirport Basel, the train needs to be changed twice with an overall travel time of two hours. The figure on the right shows the main train lines in Switzerland, highlighting the three international airports and Fribourg, the main location of the summer school.

How to reach the Universities?

The University of Fribourg and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland are both located on the same campus. The address is Boulevard de Pérolles 90, 1700 Fribourg. On Monday and Friday we will be room G130, entrance G, 1st floor.

The campus can be reached in 15 minutes on foot from the train station. There are several direct buses from the station (1, 3, 8, 9), the stop is Charmettes. More information on the Swiss public transport website: https://www.sbb.ch/en/.

How to reach the chalet?

The chalet is located in Moléson-sur-Gruyères, a small village in the mountains. A private bus will depart from the university on Monday at 15:30 and bring all participants to the chalet, which is a 35 minutes drive.

The return will be on Friday at 10:00. We strongly encourage participants to be there for the private shuttle. Otherwise, it is possible to reach the chalet with public transport (1h10, 2 changes) to Moléson-sur-Gruyères.

Accommodation

From Monday to Friday, participants and lecturers are housed in the chalet. Toilets and showers are available on each floor outside of the rooms. In each room, there are at least one washbasin and one or several tables and chairs.

Bed linen will be provided. Participants will have to bring their own towel. A military blanket is provided. If the participants prefer, they may bring their own sleeping bags.

Room sharing

Participants should be aware that they will have to share their room with at least one person and up to 4 people in a room with 16 beds. The rooms are spacious enough for each participant to have their own space.

If a participant does not wish to share a room, they can book a room in another establishment in the area (e.g. hotels or Airbnb) at their own expense. However, there will be no reduction of the registration fees.

Meals

On Monday and Friday, we will eat at the university restaurant. On Tuesday lunchtime, we will eat in the restaurant of the cheese factory next to the chalet, on Wednesday in Gruyère, and on Thursday on the top of the Moléson mountain if the weather allows.

In all cases, we will propose to the participants a pre-selected list of dishes. Vegetarian options will be provided, as well as water and coffee. Participants are free to have another dish and/or add other drinks at their own expense. Dinner will be in a restaurant next to the chalet.
